Why Walk?

If you live only a few miles from your work or desired destination, consider giving your car a break. If your commute is far, walk to a Calaveras Transit bus stop and take the bus the rest of the way.

Other benefits to walking include:

  • Gives you more energy and stamina, lifts your mood
  • Tones your muscles and strengthens your bones
  • Lowers your risk of health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes
  • Increases the number of calories your body uses
  • Gives you an opportunity to actively socialize with friends and family

Walking Safety Tips

Calaverasweb_WalkTipsVLook Before You Cross. Look left, right, and left again before crossing a street or look over your shoulder for turning cars, especially at intersections.

Make Eye Contact. Don’t assume that drivers see you. Make eye contact before you cross the street.

Use the Crosswalk. Cross at corners or at a marked crosswalk. This is where drivers expect to see you.

Follow the Rules. Follow directions from crossing guards.

Be Visible. Walk where cars and bikes can see you. Wear bright clothes, and use lights and reflectors when it is dark outside.
